About This Pattern

This basket is a big one. It sits by the door or under a shelf. I think of it for blankets, toys, or stray mail. It needs an evening with the television on, and a steady hand for the increase rounds. The super bulky yarn moves fast once the base is set. By round eight, you have a sturdy shell, ready for whatever needs a home.

Main Pattern

  1. Round 1Ch4. join with a slip stitch to beg ch to form a ring, ch2 (counts as 1dc), work 19dc in ring, join with a slip stitch to beg dc (20dc)
  2. Round 2Ch2 (counts as 1dc from here and throughout unless otherwise stated) 2dc in first st * 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st * Repeat around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc (30dc)
  3. Round 3Ch2, 2dc in first st * 1dc in next 2sts, 2dc in next st * Repeat around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc (40dc)
  4. Rounds 4–7Ch2, 1dc in each st around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc (40dc)
  5. Round 8Ch1 (does not count as a stitch from here and throughout) 1sc in each st around, join with a slip stitch to beg sc (40sc)
  6. Round 9Ch1, 1sc in first 2sts, ch12, skip 4sts (handle space made) 1sc in remaining sts, join with a slip stitch to beg sc
  7. Round 10Ch1, 1sc in first 2sts, work 12sc in handle space, 1sc in remaining sts, join with a slip stitch to beg sc (48sc)
  8. Round 11Ch1, Tightly slip stitch in each st around, join with a slip stitch to the beginning slip stitch (48sts)Fasten off and weave in ends.

Before the first stitch

  1. Check your yardage. One skein at 106 yards should cover the full 8 rounds, but weigh it if you have scraps to add.
  2. Read round one twice before you start. The ring and 20dc base sets every round after it.
  3. Place a stitch marker at the join. Super bulky stitches blur together, and you will lose the seam without one.

Minutes per piece

  • Base and increase rounds (R1-R3) about 30 to 45 minutes, because each round increases and needs a stitch count check
  • Body, rim, and finishing (R4-R8) about 1.5 to 2 hours, because five rounds of 40 stitches take longer in super bulky yarn

Other yarns that work

  • wool, super bulky weight gives more structure and holds its shape better, though it needs a bigger hook, around 10mm, for the same gauge
  • cotton blend, bulky weight makes a smaller, denser basket with less drape, so you may need an extra skein to reach the same 19 inch size

Where it ends up

  • A floor basket for throw blankets, paired with a reading chair nearby.
  • A bathroom holder for towels, set next to the tub.
  • A toy bin for the living room, paired with a low shelf for easy reach.

Small notes

  • A 9mm hook feels big at first. Keep your tension loose, or the rounds will cup instead of flattening.
  • Mark the join every round. With super bulky yarn, the slip stitch join can hide inside the stitch next to it.
  • Weave in ends as you go. One thick tail at 106 yards leaves little room to redo a loose spot later.
  • Finished size is approximately 19 inch Diameter x 8 inch Height, not including the handle. Gauge is not specified for this pattern.

Little questions

  • Why is my basket smaller than 19 inches?

Super bulky yarn varies a lot between brands. Check your 20dc count after round one, and adjust your hook size if it runs tight.

  • Do I need stitch markers for every round?

Not every round, but the increase rounds help the most. Rounds two and three change stitch count fast, so a marker keeps you honest.

  • Can I skip the handle and still use this pattern?

Yes, the main pattern forms the basket body on its own. The handle is separate from the 8 base rounds.

  • How much yarn should I have left after round eight?

106 yards, you should have a small amount left for seaming or a handle. If you are short, weigh your remaining skein before the last round.
