What this site knows about you

Almost nothing, and this page says exactly what the almost is.

The short version

Yarn Gallery is a stack of plain pages. Reading a pattern here puts nothing of yours in my hands. The only piece of information I ever hold is an email address, and only if you typed one into the newsletter form yourself and pressed the button.

What happens when you open a pattern

Your browser asks my server for a page and my server sends the page. That is the whole transaction. There is no analytics script counting you, no advertising, no pixel from a social network, no third-party code of any kind on these pages, and no cookie set by me. I do not build a profile of what you read, because I never collect the readings in the first place.

Like any web server, mine records the ordinary request information it needs to serve pages and stay upright. I do not use it to work out who you are, and it is not passed to anybody else.

The one exception: the newsletter form

If you fill in the newsletter form, your email address is sent to this site's own address at /subscribe.php and stored so I can send you the fortnightly email. That is the only field on the form and the only thing kept. No name, no location, no guess at what you like.

It is used for one thing: sending the newsletter. It is not sold, not rented, not swapped, not handed to an advertiser and not fed into anybody else's mailing list.

The fonts come from Google

Plainly, because you should know: the handwriting on this site is Patrick Hand and the body text is Nunito, and both are requested from Google's font servers when a page loads. That request tells Google your IP address and the usual browser details, the same as it does on the many other sites that use them. I use those two typefaces because the handwriting is half of what makes this place feel like my notebook.

If your browser or an extension blocks them, nothing breaks. The pages fall back to Segoe Print or Bradley Hand for the handwriting and Trebuchet MS or whatever your system uses for the body, and every pattern still reads perfectly.

How to be taken off the list

Write to hello@yarngallery.com and say the word. You do not have to give a reason or fill in a survey about why you are going. I delete the address; that is the end of it. If you would rather know what I hold for you first, ask for that instead and I will tell you.

Things I do not do

  • I do not sell, rent or trade your email address.
  • I do not run advertising or an ad network on these pages.
  • I do not use tracking pixels, session recording or heatmaps.
  • I do not follow you around other websites, because I have nothing here that could.

If any of this changes

If I ever add something that collects more than an email address, this page gets rewritten before the thing goes live, and the date below changes with it. No quiet additions.
