About This Pattern

This top is an evening project, not a weekend one. The chest panel grows row by row, in suzette stitch, slow and steady. Sides shape the fit. The bottom ruffle adds movement, built in four stages of increasing dc. White carries the body. Pink marks the details and straps. It needs a clear table, good light, and patience for the ruffle rows.

Before the first stitch

  1. Count your starting chain of 31 before row one begins.
  2. Read through the suzette stitch repeat twice before starting the chest.
  3. Set aside your pink yarn for straps and details early.

Minutes per piece

  • Chest panel about 90 minutes, because the suzette repeat runs across many rows
  • Sides and bottom ruffle about 2 to 3 hours, because the ruffle stages shift stitch counts each row

Other yarns that work

  • Cotton, worsted weight Gives a crisper ruffle and less drape. Use the same hook size.
  • Acrylic blend, DK weight Makes a lighter, smaller top. Size down your hook slightly.

Where it ends up

  • A warm-weather top for everyday wear, paired with high-waisted shorts.
  • A layering piece over a plain camisole for cooler evenings.
  • A handmade gift for a crocheter who likes ruffled hems.

Joining up

  1. Step 1 Weaving in Ends:: The crocheter mentions inserting the excess pink yarn to hide it, which is a standard finishing technique.
  2. Step 2 Straps:: The tutorial includes instructions for making and attaching the straps.
  3. Step 3 Blocking (Optional):: While not explicitly mentioned, blocking the finished top with steam or water may help to shape and even out the stitches.

Small notes

  • Keep tension even through the suzette rows. Loose stitches show in this pattern.
  • Mark strap placement before you attach them. It saves unpicking later.

Little questions

  • Why does the chest panel have so many rows?

The suzette stitch repeats across 125 rows to build width and texture. Each row is short, so it moves faster than it looks. Stick to the repeat and it stays even.

  • Can I make the ruffle bigger?

The ruffle grows through four shaping rows already, each increasing stitch count. Adding more rows past that risks an uneven curl. I'd stay with the four as written.

  • What if I only have one color of yarn?

The pattern uses white for the body and pink for details and straps. One color still works fine structurally. You'll just lose the contrast at the straps.

  • Do I need stitch markers?

I use one to mark strap placement before attaching them. It keeps both sides even. A scrap of contrast yarn works just as well.
