About This Pattern

This doll is a small evening project. I crochet the body and legs first. Then I shape a flowy skirt in double crochet. I add a wig cap for her hair. I finish with a necklace or simple face details. She fits in a palm, not a shelf hog. I like making her when I want calm, quiet stitching. She becomes a gift, or a little keeper for my own shelf.

Body and Legs

Magic Circle: Start with 6 single crochets (sc) into a Magic Circle for the leg.

  1. Round 2Work 2 sc in each stitch (stitch increase), making a total of 12 sc. Tighten up and knot the tail and cut.
  2. Round 3Work in back loops only, 1 sc in each stitch around.
  3. Round 4Decrease round - 1 sc in the first two stitches, then complete four single crochet decreases (sc2tog), ending with 8 sc.
  4. Rounds 5–101 sc in each stitch around. Slip stitch into the first stitch of round 11 to finish the leg, stuff the leg, and cut the yarn.Repeat for the second leg but do not cut the yarn after stuffing; proceed to join the legs.

Joining Legs and Body

  1. Join LegsWith a lighter color, join the legs by working 1 slip stitch through both legs, then crochet 15 sc evenly around the joined legs.
  2. Round 121 sc in each stitch around.
  3. Round 13Switch to half-double crochet (hdc) for each st around.
  4. Round 14Work in the third loop only (or back loop if easier) with 1 sc in each st to create a ridge for the skirt.

Skirt

  1. Start SkirtWork a double crochet (dc) into the first 6 stitches, then 3 dc into the 7th stitch, then dc in the next 7 stitches, and 2 dc in the last stitch, join with a slip stitch.Next Round(s): Continue the skirt, adjusting the stitch pattern to create the desired skirt shape and length.

Head and Finishing Touches

  1. HeadBegin increasing rounds for the head directly on top of the body, ensuring to place safety eyes between rounds 22 and 23, about four stitches apart.
  2. Continue HeadWork several rounds of sc for head shaping, followed by decrease rounds to form the top of the head.
  3. Finish HeadClose the head by decreasing until closed, stuff, and finish off.

Before the first stitch

  1. I check my yarn amounts before starting the body.
  2. I read Round 4 first, since it decreases fast.
  3. I set a stitch marker at the start of each round.

Minutes per piece

  • Body and legs about 1 hour, because the leg works through 4 rounds plus shaping
  • Skirt about 45 minutes, because the increase pattern needs close counting

Other yarns that work

  • cotton, worsted weight Gives a crisper skirt, but needs a slightly larger hook for drape.
  • acrylic, worsted weight Keeps stitches soft for stuffing, with easier color changes for the sleeve.

Where it ends up

  • I set her on a bookshelf as a quiet decoration.
  • She makes a small gift for a child's room.
  • I pair her with other amigurumi on a nursery shelf.

Joining up

  1. Step 1 Arms: Start with a magic circle and continue for several rounds, followed by a color change for the sleeve, decrease to shape the arm, then finish off and sew to the body.
  2. Step 2 Sew Arms: Position and sew arms to the sides of the body.
  3. Step 3 Skirt Adjustment: Once the body and head are complete, return to the skirt for any final adjustments.
  4. Step 4 Hair: Using black yarn, create a wig cap by crocheting a flat disk that covers the doll's head. Then attach strands of yarn around the wig cap for hair.
  5. Step 5 Finishing Details: Add any additional details such as a necklace or facial features as desired.

Small notes

  • I use a small hook for tight stitches, so stuffing stays hidden.
  • I mark the round start, since the legs join with a slip stitch.
  • I stuff the legs firmly before closing, for a doll that stands.
  • Certain aspects, like the length of the top and skirt, can be adjusted for an improved look.

Little questions

  • How many rounds does the leg take?

The leg works through rounds like increase and decrease shaping. I count ten rounds total before closing. Stuffing follows right after.

  • Can I skip the wig cap for the hair?

I crochet a flat disk for the wig cap first. Then I attach yarn strands for hair. Skipping it leaves the head bare.

  • Do I need to adjust the skirt length?

I return to the skirt after the body and head are done. Then I adjust it to fit my doll. The length is easy to extend.

  • What stitch joins each skirt round?

I join each skirt round with a slip stitch. The first round increases in two spots for shape. Later rounds follow the same method.
