About This Pattern

This runner builds from small pineapple motifs, worked round by round. Each one starts as a ring of 18 double crochets. From there, chain spaces shrink, row by row, to shape the fruit. It is a quiet, repeatable project. Good for an evening with the television low. It needs a steady hook hand, a few stitch markers, and patience with counting.

Material

Medium weight number 4 acrylic yarn 4 millimeter crochet hook Create a Slip Knot and Chain 5: Make a slip knot.

Chain 5 stitches (ch 5).

Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first chain to form a ring.

  1. Round 1(18 Double Crochets): Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet [dc]). Make 17 double crochets (dc) into the ring.Join to the third chain of the starting ch 3 with a sl st.

You should have a total of 18 dc.

  1. Round 2(Chain Spaces and Double Crochets): Chain 4 (counts as the first dc and a chain 1 space).Dc in the second dc from the previous round, ch 1. Repeat this pattern around.Join to the third chain of the starting ch 4 with a sl st.In Round 3 (Chain Spaces and Double Crochets): Single crochet (sc) in a ch-1 space, ch 2 (counts as the first dc).Skip the next dc, dc in the next ch-1 space, ch 2. Repeat around.Join to the second chain of the starting ch 2 with a sl st.
  2. Round 4Two Double Crochets into Each Chain Space Sc in a ch-2 space, ch 2 (counts as the first dc).Dc in the same ch-2 space, ch 2.2 dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 2. Repeat around.Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc made. For Round 5 (Three Double Crochets in Each Chain Space): Sc in a ch-2 space, ch 2 (counts as the first dc).2 more dc in the same ch-2 space, ch 2.3 dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 2. Repeat around.Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.
  3. Round 6Three Chains between Three Double Crochets Perform similar steps as round 5 but with 3 chains instead of 2 between each set of 3 dc.Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc.
  4. Round 7Adding Fan Stitches Create fan stitches for this round by working (3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc) in the chain spaces from the previous round.
  5. Rounds 8–10Adding Chains Each of these rounds adds an additional chain to the chain spaces between the fans.Round 8: 2 chains.
  6. Round 93 chains. For Round 10: 4 chains. Complete each round as before and join with a sl st.

Before the first stitch

  1. Check your yarn amount against the full runner length you want.
  2. Read Round 1 first, so the starting ring count makes sense.
  3. Keep a stitch marker on the first stitch of each round.

Minutes per piece

  • First motif, rounds 1 through 7 about 45 minutes, because the chain spaces need careful counting
  • Remaining motifs and joining about 3-5 hours, because each motif repeats the same 7 rounds

Other yarns that work

  • Cotton, worsted weight Gives crisper pineapple edges and a flatter runner, but needs a firmer hand on tension.
  • Acrylic-cotton blend, worsted weight Keeps the soft drape of acrylic, with a bit more structure in each motif.

Where it ends up

  • Lay it down the center of a dining table, under a bowl of fruit.
  • Drape it across a sideboard, paired with a small lamp.
  • Use it under a tray of mugs, for coffee mornings at the kitchen table.

Joining up

  1. Step 1 Gradually decrease the chain spaces in each row following the pattern given.
  2. Step 2 Once the pineapple patterns are completed, you'll have a series of these motifs running down the length of the runner.

Small notes

  • Use a 4mm hook throughout, and check your 18-dc ring lies flat before moving on.
  • Mark the first stitch of every round, so you never lose the join point.
  • Keep tension even across all motifs, so the finished runner lies flat on a table.

Little questions

  • Why does Round 1 start with 18 double crochets?

That ring is the base for the whole pineapple shape. All later rounds build from that even count. Getting it right keeps the motif symmetrical.

  • What if my chain-5 ring feels too loose?

A loose ring often means the slip knot started too open. Try a slightly firmer pull before the first chain. A snug ring holds the 18 dc without gaps.

  • How many motifs make a full runner?

That depends on your table length, since each motif adds a fixed width. Lay a few finished motifs along your table first. Add more until the length feels right.

  • Can I join motifs as I go, instead of at the end?

Yes, joining as you finish each motif saves a separate seaming session. It also lets you check the runner length early. Either way works with this pattern.
