About This Pattern

This is a toe-up sock, built in hdc from a small round. It fits a quiet evening, start to cuff. You shape the toe, turn a heel flap, then let a highlight color ruffle up the ankle. Nothing about it is rushed. It needs two yarns, one hook, and a little patience for the heel turn. By the end you have something warm, specific, and entirely handmade.

The Toe and Foot

  1. Round 1Create a slip knot and chain 3; work 8 hdc into the first chain, then slip stitch to join. (8 hdc)
  2. Round 2Ch 1, work 2 hdc in each stitch around, sl st to join.
  3. Round 3Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around, sl st to join.
  4. Round 4Ch 1, work (1 hdc, 2 hdc in next stitch) around, sl st to join.
  5. Rounds 5–20Continue working 1 hdc in each stitch around for the next 16 rows (total of 20 rows from the start) to create the foot length.

The Heel

  1. Round 1Ch 1 and work hdc across, leaving the last 6 stitches unworked; ch 1 and turn.
  2. Rounds 2–33Work 1 hdc in every stitch, ch 1 and turn; repeat for a total of 33 rows to form the heel flap.
  3. Round 34Fold the heel so both sides meet and join using the back loops only, slip stitching across to close the heel cup.

The Ankle and Cuff

  1. Round 1Attach main color yarn around the ankle opening; ch 1 and work sc evenly around to create the base.
  2. Rounds 2–3Ch 1, hdc around for two rounds.
  3. Round 4Ch 1, hdc in the back loop only (BLO) for the next round to create the base for Ruffle 1.
  4. Round 5+Continue with several more hdc rounds, alternating normal and BLO rounds to set up Ruffles 2 and 3.

Adding the Ruffles

  1. Round 1Work into the front loops (FL) of the marked BLO rows; for each ruffle, ch 1 and work 2 hdc into each front loop around.
  2. Round 2Optionally, add a highlight color accent by working 1 sc in each stitch across the ruffle edge; repeat for all ruffle base rows.

Before the first stitch

  1. Check you have close to 100g of main color and 25g of highlight color on hand.
  2. Read through the heel flap rounds once before starting, since the turns repeat often.
  3. Work a small swatch in hdc to confirm your 3.5mm hook gives a snug, not loose, fabric.

Minutes per piece

  • Toe, foot, and heel flap about 2-3 hours, because the foot alone runs twenty rows before the heel even starts
  • Heel shaping, ankle, and ruffles about 2-3 hours, because the BLO ruffle rounds need careful, even tension

Other yarns that work

  • Fingering weight wool blend Makes a thinner, closer-fitting sock. Use a smaller hook, closer to 3mm, and expect more rounds for the same length.
  • Cotton-acrylic worsted blend Gives a crisper ruffle with less drape. Stitch definition improves, but the fabric feels firmer against skin.

Where it ends up

  • Warm house socks for cold floors, paired with a simple wool throw.
  • A handmade gift for someone who likes small, finished things.
  • A slow, evening project to pair with a podcast or quiet music.

Small notes

  • Use a stitch marker on round one of the toe, since eight stitches are easy to miscount.
  • Keep tension even through the BLO rounds, since loose stitches show plainly in the ruffle.
  • You can customize the colors for the ruffles to match your style, making them ideal for lounging, gifting, or adding a handmade touch to your winter wardrobe. Whether made with soft pastels or bold contrasts, these crochet socks bring both comfort and personality to your handmade collection.

Little questions

  • Can I make both socks at once?

Yes, if you have two balls of main color going. It helps keep row counts matching between the pair.

  • Why does the heel flap take so many rounds?

The heel flap works flat across thirty-three rows to build enough fabric. Folding it closed in back loops only then shapes the heel cup.

  • What if my ruffle looks too tight?

Check your BLO rounds for tension first. A looser 4mm hook on those rounds usually softens the ruffle.

  • Do I need stitch markers throughout?

Mostly just at the start, to track your first eight stitches. After the foot settles into even rounds, you likely won't need them.
