About This Pattern

This little unicorn starts small and grows leg by leg. Two legs join before the body rises around them. A tiny horn waits on a finer hook. It sits well on a shelf or in small hands. Nothing here needs a full evening alone. It fits between other things, a round or two at a time, with fiberfill close by.

Skirt

With colorful yarn: Go to the R 12 of the body.

Before the first stitch

  1. Check you have both hook sizes ready, 4.0-4.5 mm and 2.5 mm for the horn.
  2. Read the skirt's Round 1 first. It works in front loops only, which changes the look, and is worked into Round 12 of the body.
  3. Set aside white yarn now. The legs, arms, and head all change color partway through.

Minutes per piece

  • Ears & Horn about 30 minutes, because both are small amigurumi pieces with only a handful of rounds each
  • Arms (make 2) about 45 minutes, because each arm holds nine rounds and one color change
  • Head about 1-1.5 hours, because fourteen rounds shape and close the head
  • Legs (R1-R7) about 45 minutes, because each leg holds seven short rounds and one color change
  • Body (from R8) about 1-2 hours, because the increases join both legs and shape the whole torso
  • Skirt about 15 minutes, a single front-loop row of double crochet added at Round 12 of the body

Other yarns that work

  • Acrylic baby weight, DK Slightly smaller finished size. Use a 3.5-4.0 mm hook and firmer stuffing to hold shape.
  • Cotton-acrylic blend, worsted Crisper stitch definition, less drape. Stitches sit tighter, so ease up on tension slightly.

Where it ends up

  • A soft toy for a child's shelf, paired with other small amigurumi.
  • A desk companion at work, sitting beside a mug or a plant.
  • A quiet gift for a new baby's room, alongside a small blanket.

Small notes

  • The skirt's Round 1 works in front loops only, worked back at Round 12 of the body. Skip this and the skirt won't sit right.
  • Don't cut the yarn after the second leg. You join straight into the body round.
  • Stuff as you go once the body closes in. Reaching inside gets harder after several rounds.

Little questions

  • Why does the skirt use front loops only?

    It leaves the back loops of Round 12 free for a cleaner join, since the skirt row is worked directly into that round. This keeps the seam tidy and distinct.

  • Do I really not cut the yarn after the second leg?

    Right, leave it attached. You chain once, join to the first leg, and keep going straight into the body.

  • What size safety eyes does this pattern use?

    8-9 mm safety eyes work well here. Insert them before you close up the head, since you can't reach in after.

  • Can I use the same hook for the horn?

    No, the horn wants the smaller 2.5 mm hook. This keeps it tight and small against the body's looser gauge.
