About This Pattern

This is a plant hanger, built to hold a small pot off the floor. It starts as a flat circle, then grows loops for hanging straps. It fits into one focused evening, not a rushed hour. You need steady tension for the increases, and patience for the loops. A stitch marker helps you track rounds. By the end, you have something to hang in a window or corner.

Crochet plant hanger with loops and a wave strap

Main Pattern

  1. Round 2Chain 2 (start of every round). Increase by placing 2 double crochets into each stitch around.

You should have 24 double crochets by the end of this round.

Slip stitch to join.

For Round 3: Chain 2.

Crochet 2 double crochets in the first stitch, then 1 double crochet in the next.

Repeat around to get a total of 36 stitches.

Slip stitch to join.

  1. Round 4Chain 2. Crochet 2 double crochets in the first stitch, then 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches.Repeat around to get a total of 48 stitches.Slip stitch to join.
  2. Round 5Chain 1. Crochet 1 single crochet in each stitch around, maintaining 48 stitches.Slip stitch to join.

Creating Loops

Chain 20.

Count 7 stitches, skip them, and slip stitch into the 8th stitch to form a loop.

Repeat the process to create 6 loops around.

Next Rounds

After finishing the loops and connecting them, perform another round of 48 single crochets.

Follow with a round of 48 double crochets.

  1. Round 1Do not tighten the slip stitch at the end of this round as you'll need it open for later.Creating Waves for the Strap: Perform 10 slip stitches followed by 5 half double crochets in the next stitch for a wave peak.
  2. Round 2Slip stitch into the next stitch, then continue with slip stitches for about 10 stitches, followed by another 5 half double crochets into the next stitch for another wave.(5)

The waves will act as attachment points for the strap.

Before the first stitch

  1. Check you have enough DK acrylic yarn for a base plus six loops.
  2. Place a stitch marker at the start of round one before you begin.
  3. Read through Round 2 and Round 3 first, so the increase pattern is clear.

Minutes per piece

  • Main Pattern base about 1 to 1.5 hours, because the increases across three rounds need careful counting
  • Loops and Next Rounds about 3 to 4 hours, because six loops and the wave strap take patient, repetitive work

Other yarns that work

  • Cotton, DK weight Gives a crisper, less stretchy hanger, with cleaner stitch definition and the same 5 mm hook.
  • Wool blend, worsted weight Makes a thicker, softer hanger with more drape, so size up to a 5.5 mm hook.

Where it ends up

  • Hang it in a bright window, paired with a small trailing plant.
  • Use it on a porch hook, next to a wooden stool or bench.
  • Set it in a reading corner, alongside a low side table.

Joining up

  1. Step 1 Place the plant pot into the hanger.
  2. Step 2 Adjust loops accordingly for balance and aesthetics.
  3. Step 3 youtube

Small notes

  • Use a 5 mm hook throughout, and check your double crochets sit even and firm.
  • Keep the stitch marker in place until each round is fully joined with a slip stitch.
  • Leave the final slip stitch loose after the double crochet round, since you need it open later.

Little questions

  • How many loops does this pattern make?

You make six loops around the base. Each loop starts with a chain of 20 stitches. They form the straps that hold the piece together.

  • Why leave the slip stitch loose at the end of the double crochet round?

You need that stitch open for the wave shaping that follows. Tightening it early makes the next round harder to work into. Keep it relaxed until you reach that step.

  • What yarn weight works best here?

Double knitting acrylic yarn is the pattern's original choice. It holds shape well and pairs evenly with a 5 mm hook. Cotton or wool blends also work, with small changes in drape.

  • How do I keep my stitch count accurate through the increases?

Use a stitch marker at the start of every round. Count stitches after each increase round before moving on. Round 2 should reach 24 double crochets by its end.
