About This Pattern

This belt is a small thing that becomes a finished outfit. It sits at the waist, a narrow strip with long ties and maybe a flower or two. I make it when a plain dress needs one more detail. It asks for steady hands, not fast ones. Every row looks the same as the last, which is its quiet comfort. Cotton gives it the shape it needs. It takes an evening, maybe two, and leaves something boutique-looking on the table.

Narrow crochet tie belt with optional flower trim

Main Pattern

Starting Chain: Ch 11.

  1. Row 1Hdc in the second chain from hook and each chain across. Turn. (10 hdc)
  2. Row 2Ch 1, hdc in each stitch across. Turn. (10 hdc)
  3. Rows 3–140Repeat Row 2 until the belt measures approximately 40 inches (102 cm).The band should measure approximately 2 inches (5 cm) wide. If your tension creates a narrower or wider strip, adjust by adding or removing foundation chains in multiples of 2.(10)

Optional Crochet Flower Motifs

Make a magic ring.

  1. Round 1Ch 2, make 10 dc into the ring. Slip stitch to join. (10 dc)
  2. Round 2*Sc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sc in next stitch.* Repeat around 5 times. (5 petals)Fasten off and leave a long tail for attaching.

Create 3 to 7 flowers depending on your preferred decoration. Sew them evenly along the belt using matching yarn.

Special Stitch

Picot edge: Ch 3, slip stitch into the first chain made. This creates a small decorative bump.

Tie Ends

At the end of the final row, ch 25.

Turn and slip stitch back along the chain.

Slip stitch across the next 10 stitches of the belt edge.

Repeat the same tie extension on the opposite end.

Decorative Border

Join yarn at one long edge.

Work single crochet evenly around the entire belt.

At each corner, make 3 single crochet stitches in the corner stitch.

Finish with a picot edge by working: sc, picot, sc along the edge.

Slip stitch to join and fasten off.

Before the first stitch

  1. Check you have the full 120 yards before starting the long row repeat.
  2. Work a small swatch in hdc to confirm your row width matches 2 inches.
  3. Read Row 1 and Row 2 fully, since every later row repeats Row 2.

Minutes per piece

  • Main band about 3-4 hours because it repeats one row 138 times
  • Flowers and border about 1-2 hours because each flower has two short rounds

Other yarns that work

  • Cotton-linen blend, light weight Slightly stiffer drape, same hook size, crisper stitch definition.
  • Bamboo-cotton blend, light weight Softer drape and sheen, may need a 3.0 mm hook for the same width.

Where it ends up

  • Cinch a loose dress at the waist for a tailored look.
  • Wrap over a cardigan to add shape to a simple outfit.
  • Tie over high-waisted pants, paired with a plain cotton top.

Joining up

  1. Step 1 Weave in all loose ends using a yarn needle.
  2. Step 2 Lightly block the belt to straighten the edges.
  3. Step 3 Arrange flowers before sewing permanently.
  4. Step 4 Secure decorations with several stitches for durability.
  5. Step 5 After completing the crochet belt, lightly wet block the piece to improve stitch definition and create a smooth professional finish. Avoid stretching the belt aggressively because the goal is to maintain the original shape.
  6. Step 6 Hand wash gently in cool water.
  7. Step 7 Lay flat to dry.
  8. Step 8 Store folded or rolled to protect the decorative details.
  9. Step 9 Avoid high heat when caring for cotton yarn accessories.

Small notes

  • Use a 3.25 mm hook for clean, even hdc stitches along the long band.
  • Choose a low-stretch cotton, since stretchy fiber can loosen a belt over time.
  • Keep tension consistent across all 138 rows, or the band will wave instead of lying flat.
  • Approx. 2 inches wide x 42 inches long (5 cm x 107 cm), including the tie ends.
  • 20 hdc x 14 rows = 4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm).
  • Use pastel colors for a soft romantic style or darker shades for a modern look.

Little questions

  • How long should the finished belt be?

The band itself should measure about 40 inches. The tie ends extend beyond that, so check your waist size before stopping.

  • Can I skip the flowers?

Yes, the band works fine as a plain belt. Add flowers only if you want the boutique look the source describes.

  • What if my band comes out narrower than 2 inches?

Add foundation chains in multiples of 2 and swatch again. This keeps the hdc texture even across the width.

  • Why does the pattern suggest cotton over wool?

Cotton holds its shape and has minimal stretch, which matters for a belt. Wool or stretchy fibers may cause the belt to loosen after wear.
