Before the first stitch
- I check my yarn amount first, since sock size varies.
- I count stitches after row 1, confirming twenty total.
- I skim rows 16 to 22, so the straight rows make sense.
Minutes per piece
- Toe and foot shaping (rows 1-15) about 1.5 hours because of the increase rounds and stitch counting
- Ankle cuff rows (row 16 onward) about 1 hour because the straight turned rows go quickly
Other yarns that work
- Worsted cotton blend Stitches hold their shape more, drape is stiffer, hook size stays the same.
- Worsted wool blend Fabric gets softer and stretchier, fits closer to the ankle, same hook works.
Where it ends up
- I wear these socks around the house on cool mornings.
- I pair them with a soft throw blanket for reading.
- I give a pair as a small birthday gift.
Joining up
- Step 1 Fasten off:: Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about 6 inches. Weave the tail through the last stitch and pull it tight. Cut the yarn again, leaving a short tail.
- Step 2 Weave in ends:: Using a yarn needle, weave in all the loose ends. You can either weave them through the back loops of the stitches or through the spaces between the stitches.
- Step 3 Steam block (optional):: If you want your socks to be more even and shaped, you can steam block them. To do this, dampen your socks and lay them flat on a clean surface. Use a steamer to gently steam the socks until they are dry. Allow the socks to cool completely before wearing them.
Small notes
- I use a 5 mm hook for even, relaxed stitches.
- I mark the first stitch of each round, so I don't lose the count.
- I check my tension on the first few rows, before the increases start.
Little questions
Can I make these socks bigger?
Yes, add more rounds to the foot shaping section. I just adjust yarn amount, since amounts depend on size already.
Why do I increase twice in some stitches?
The increases at the ch 4 and ch 2 spaces shape the toe end. I keep count carefully, since row 1 should total twenty stitches.
Do I need to block these socks?
No, blocking is optional here. I steam block mine lightly, to even out the stitches.
