About This Pattern

This basket set holds small things in order. A back panel ties two oval baskets together for a bathroom shelf. Each piece works in simple single crochet, round after round. The back panel measures about 10 inches wide and 26 inches long. One basket rises about 5 inches tall, the other about 4.5. Cotton yarn keeps its shape near steam and water. It needs an evening, a J hook, and patience for long rows.

Hook

6.0mm (US J/10) crochet hook Going down a hook size from the yarn label recommendation creates tighter stitches

Notions

Stitch marker (or scrap yarn)

Yarn needle for weaving ends One wooden or metal dowel rod, 12 inches long and approximately half inch diameter Scissors

Measuring tape

Gauge

Check your gauge before starting. If your stitches are too loose, the baskets will sag under weight. Go down a hook size if needed.

Finished Measurements

Total length from hanging loops to bottom: approximately 26 inches Width: approximately 10 inches Top basket depth: 5 inches

Middle basket depth: 4.5 inches Bottom basket depth: 4 inches

Before the first stitch

  1. Wind enough yarn first. You need 350 to 400 yards of bulky cotton.
  2. Place a stitch marker at the start of each basket round.
  3. Read through the back panel rows once. Ninety rows go by fast once you settle in.

Minutes per piece

  • Back panel about 2 hours because of the ninety-row length
  • Oval basket rounds about 1 hour each because of the shaping in the first few rounds

Other yarns that work

  • Acrylic blend, bulky weight Lighter basket with less structure. Go down a hook size to keep it standing firm.
  • Cotton-linen blend, worsted weight Thinner fabric and more rows needed. Drape is softer than the chunky cotton cord.

Where it ends up

  • Rolled towels on an open bathroom shelf.
  • Small toiletries lined up beside a sink.
  • Hair ties and clips kept on a dresser top.

Small notes

  • A 6.0mm hook keeps stitches tight enough to hold their shape under weight.
  • Mark the start of each basket round. It is easy to lose count in plain single crochet.
  • Cotton yarn holds humidity well, which suits a basket near a sink or tub.

Little questions

  • Why does the back panel need ninety rows?

That length gives the panel its 26-inch measurement. It needs to be long enough to hold both baskets against a wall or shelf.

  • Can I make just one basket instead of two?

Yes, the back panel still works fine with a single basket attached. Just adjust where you plan to mount it.

  • What if my basket leans or sags?

Check your gauge before you start the next one. Loose stitches are the usual cause, so try going down a hook size.

  • Do I need a stitch marker for the oval base?

Yes, place one at the start of round one to track where each round begins. It saves confusion once you reach the plain rounds.
