About This Pattern
This is a small cover for a paperback, dressed up with roses. It holds a book under 5 1/2 by 8 inches. The surface work takes longer than the base, so plan for a quiet evening with good light. You need steady hands for the spiral shaping and a little patience for the paisley. Nothing here is hard. It just asks you to slow down near the end.

- Reverse single crochet (also called crab stitch)
- Working left to right instead of the usual right to left, insert hook in previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops. Keep your tension relaxed. This creates a lovely rope-like edge.
- Picot
- Chain 3, slip stitch in the front loop and left side bar of the stitch at the base of the chain. This creates a tiny decorative bump.
- Surface slip stitch
- Hold yarn on wrong side, insert hook from right side to wrong side, pull loop to right side, then insert hook in next spot and pull new loop through loop on hook. This lets you "draw" lines on your finished fabric.
- Invisible join
- Cut yarn, pull tail through last stitch, thread needle, insert under both loops of first stitch, then back into top of last stitch. This creates a seamless finish.
- Note for Left-Handed Crocheters
- Work the written rows as usual. For surface stitching and motif placement, mirror the placement diagram horizontally if that feels more natural. The finished sleeve will look the same.
- UK Terminology Note: This pattern uses US terms. US sc
- UK dc, US hdc = UK htr, and US dc = UK tr.

Before the first stitch
- Check you have the dark purple, light lilac, and dusty rose or yellow scraps set aside before starting the flowers.
- Swatch the lavender main color first, since the panel measures about 7 by 9 inches after blocking.
- Read through the rose shaping note before Row 2, so the spiral roll makes sense when you reach it.
Minutes per piece
- Total estimate 10 to 14 relaxed hours, per the pattern's overall time estimate
- Panel and border about 2 hours, because the border alone runs 216 stitches around
- Striped gusset about 3-4 hours, because the gusset runs 164 rows with repeated color changes
- Roses, leaves, and paisley about 3-4 hours, because the spiral shaping and small petals go slowly
- Joining and finishing about 2-3 hours, because pinning and seaming the gusset to both panels takes care
Other yarns that work
- Cotton-acrylic blend, DK weight Gives similar stitch definition with a softer hand, no hook change needed.
- Mercerized cotton, DK weight Adds extra sheen and crispness to the roses, may need a slightly smaller hook for firmness.
Where it ends up
- A cover for a paperback you carry daily, paired with a simple tote.
- A gift wrap for a favorite book, paired with a ribbon bookmark.
- A decorative sleeve for a bedside book, paired with a small reading lamp.
Joining up
- Step 1 This is where your sleeve comes together. Take your time with pinning, it makes the seaming so much easier.
- Step 2 Pin Row 1 of the gusset to the upper left corner of the front panel. Match 60 gusset rows down the left side, 44 rows across the bottom, and 60 rows up the right side. Four extra gusset rows ease around the two lower corners.
- Step 3 With wrong sides together, whipstitch through the inner loops or slip stitch through both layers. Repeat to attach the back panel to the other edge of the gusset.
- Step 4 Work a neat white surface line along the spine stripes if desired, then weave in ends.
- Step 5 Assembly Checkpoint: The top edge remains open. The sleeve should stand softly with a book inside and measure about 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) deep at the side gusset.
- Step 6 Finishing Steps: Weave in all ends on the wrong side. For raised motifs, split the yarn tail and weave in different directions so the pieces stay secure. Steam lightly from 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) away. Do not flatten the roses. Cup your hand around each motif as it cools to preserve the dimension. Optional lining: Fold lining fabric with right sides together and stitch side seams. Insert into sleeve with wrong side of fabric against wrong side of crochet. Hand-sew just below the top edge. For a firmer top, work one final round of white reverse sc around the opening.
- Step 7 Care Instructions: Spot clean when possible. For full washing, place in a mesh bag and hand wash in cool water with mild soap. Press in a towel, reshape, and dry flat. Avoid heavy wringing because the raised decorations can distort.
- Step 8 Size Customization Tips: Width: Add or subtract chains from the panel foundation. Finished width changes by about 0.15 inches (0.38 cm) per 1 sc at stated gauge. Height: Add or subtract panel rows. Finished height changes by about 0.14 inches (0.36 cm) per row at stated gauge. Gusset: Keep 11 sts wide for a slim paperback; use 13 to 15 sts for thicker journals. Gusset length should match side + bottom + side of your panel, plus 4 easing rows for the lower corners.
Small notes
- Use a US E-4 hook for firm stitches that hold the rose shape.
- Mark the center of each rose foundation chain, so the spiral stays even as you roll it.
- Keep tension firm on the paisley rounds, so the lace edge stays dimensional and doesn't flop.
- Gauge: 26 sc x 28 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet, blocked lightly. Swatch and match gauge before starting so the fabric stays firm enough to protect the book.
- Skill Level: Confident intermediate. A motivated beginner can still succeed by following the stitch counts and blocking notes carefully.
- Finished Size: approximately 6 3/4 x 8 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches (17 x 22 x 4 cm) after light blocking, fitting paperbacks up to about 5 1/2 x 8 inches (14 x 20 cm) depending on book thickness.
Little questions
Can I skip the pearl beads?
Yes, the beads are optional accents. The roses and leaves hold the design fine without them.
Will the roses flatten over time?
Not if you stitch the base several times as directed. Cupping each motif while it cools after steaming also helps it keep shape.
Do I need the fabric lining?
No, the lining is optional. It adds structure if your book slides around inside the sleeve.
What if my gauge runs looser than the pattern?
Swatch first and check your panel against the 7 by 9 inch target. A smaller hook can bring a loose gauge back in line.
